Organic Labels in US

The National Organic Program (NOP) of the US Department of Agriculture is responsible for setting the standards for classifying agricultural products as organic. All agricultural products that are produced within the US must meet the NOP standards before they can be labeled as “organic”

The following are the broad categories of Organic labels according to the USDA –

Products labeled as “100 percent organic”

Products labeled as “100 percent organic” have to be made up of material, which is produced from organic substances only.

Products labeled “organic”

Products labeled “organic” have to be made up of material, which are produced from a minimum of 95 percent organic substances.


Processed products labeled “made with organic ingredients”

Processed items which have more than 70 percent organic constituents are allowed to use the phrase “made with organic ingredients”. However, such products cannot have the USDA seal displayed on the package.

Processed products with less than 70 percent organic ingredients

Such products are not allowed to use the term organic anywhere on the principal display panel.
